Skin Care in the Sun

The FDA changed the rules for sunscreen this year… Manufacturer’s can no longer use the word Sun “block” or “waterproof” or screen values over SPF 50 in describing their product since there isn’t scientific evidence to support that claim.

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) reports that 2 million Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year alone and 1 in 5 will develop skin cancer over their lifetime.

With these daunting numbers, what’s the proper protection that will inhibit sun damage yet not instigate other problems?

  • Get the dirt on Minerals:  Mineral components, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide,  deflect UV rays rather than the chemical sunscreens that may absorb the rays using oxybenzone. These minerals prove to be less irritating to skin and can be found in oil free forms. 
  • Read the fine PrintCheck labels for potentially harmful ingredients and claims. Avoid sunscreen containing oxybenzone and retinyl palmitate. Companies cannot make broad claims of protection so look for specific, scientifically backed information. 
  • Daily BoostYour skin is best nourished by foods or supplements which contain the natural ingredients of green tea, Vitamin E and coQ10. These elements provide free radical protection which cause skin damage and help restore cells from daily sun and pollution exposure. coQ10 is naturally found in meat and fish and vegetable oils in substantial doses.
  • Don’t inhaleNanoparticles in chemical spray on sunscreens are known to cause health risks when inhaled, especially those containing titanium dioxide. 

Even with sunscreen, take care to monitor how much time your skin is exposed to the sun at one time. After all, shade is the best alternative for healthy skin protection but Nerdynistas find it outdoors rather than under the fluorescent lights.
